The secret to starting a successful craft business

Do you wish you could start a business around your passion for making things?

A business selling your crafts or just using your creative skills?

You might be put off starting your own craft business by wondering how you’d ever scale a craft business to the point where you earn enough to live off, without having to work every hour of the day.

The pressure of constantly having to make things to have enough products to sell can be exhausting and eventually take all the joy out of it.

You’re not alone here, that’s why most people start their craft business as a side hustle. Fitting it in around their day jobs.

But what if you want to quit your job? Because you either don’t like it anymore, it doesn’t fulfil you or you just want to spend more time at home – maybe you’ve got kids to look after.

There is a way you can start a successful craft business; I’ve found there’s a secret to it and it’s probably not what you think.

Why do you want to start a craft business?

If you are:

  • stuck in a job that is stressful or just doesn’t excite you
  • feeling unfulfilled and
  • not able to just be yourself

I know where you’re coming from.

I love all things creative but working at my 9-5 office job was sucking all the life out of me. I felt too drained, even at the weekends to be creative.

And I found I was just not in the creative mood anymore. And I felt like I’d lost part of myself.

I’ve got a degree in Animal behaviour, but I wasn’t using it and the more I thought about it the more I just didn’t want that lifestyle anymore. It didn’t excite me.

A few years ago, I tried and failed to set up a blog. I didn’t know what I was doing, got no traffic and eventually gave up. I thought this whole idea of ‘making money online whilst being creative’ was too good to be true, right?

I knew that I’d I wanted to change the way my life was going, and to make that change I realised I had to do something completely different

That’s when I came across an education platform co-founded by the two of the best entrepreneurs in the world. Using the training modules they provided I learnt everything I needed to know about setting up and running a successful online business.

How does this all relate to crafts?

Well, I’ve always been a creative person but when I started my online business, I didn’t really know what I wanted it to revolve around. Through the guidance from the leaders during the live webinars and coaching calls, I decided to follow my creative passion and start building this website around my love for all things creative. I’ve even started a small shop selling handmade jewellery.

But the real secret is that I am an affiliate marketer.

Using the marketing skills I’ve learnt on the online education platform, I sell other people’s products and services and get a commission when I do so. This isn’t just pennies either, there are plenty of people who make a very healthy living by solely being an affiliate marketer!

But I do this alongside selling my crafts.

And here’s why I think you should do the same 👇

Free up your time.

If you set yourself up as an affiliate marketer you can earn a proper income, completely online. And once you’ve learnt the marketing skills you need the affiliate side of your business can practically run itself allowing you to earn a passive income.

No more trading your time for money!… except where you want to. By having the affiliate side of your business earning money for you passively you can spend more time being creative. And having that financial burden lifted can be great for making and selling your crafts.

You can set a limit on how long you spend crafting each week or how many products you’re going to make, which takes the pressure off. You get to make and sell what you love without it eating up every second of your day.

You’re also protected more financially, as you’ll still have money coming in even if it’s a slow-selling period for your crafted products.

This all means you have more time to do the other things that matter to you, whether that’s spending time with your partner, exploring the world or going to craft workshops!

Now, I’m not about to suggest you start selling weight loss shakes as an affiliate like all the influencers you see on Instagram and YouTube.

As an affiliate you get to pick which companies and products you want to promote, this means you can choose something you’re passionate about and that really interests you. So many companies these days have affiliate programs and you’re bound to find something that you like.

For example, I love learning things on Skillshare and they have a pretty good affiliate program that fits in with my creative blog niche, so I find it really easy to promote them as an affiliate – I like and already use their product and it’s something that resonates with me an many of my readers.

Getting people to buy from you

The lifeblood of any business is customers and if you set up a website and don’t know how to get customers then your business is as good as dead. The online world is massive, the phrase ‘build it and they will come’ does not apply, you’ll just get lost in the sea of infinite blog posts and pictures of cats.

This is why you need to invest in yourself and learn some marketing skills. Learn how to get the right people to your business at the right time. If you can learn how to get someone to buy one thing from you, you can learn how to sell anything!

Now you could go it alone

You could do everything yourself, learn how to set up a website and rely on google searches and Youtube videos to learn how to get customers to your site. You could try setting yourself up on social media, build a following and grow your business that way.

Unfortunately, that’s not as easy as some of these ‘gurus’ make it seem. There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes in order to scale a business on social media. And googling everything can quickly lead to frustration and overwhelm.

Or you could even forgo the website and just set yourself up selling your crafts on Etsy. And this can work to a point, but unfortunately with sites like Etsy is that they take a commission of whatever you earn from selling your products. On top of that, there’s little customisation that you can do to make yourself stand out from the crowd, and it’s a BIG crowd.

Say you love making handmade soap and you listed your products on Etsy, someone searching for ‘handmade soap’ would currently find 67,000+ listings on Etsy, that’s a lot of competition. 😲

Plus, a traditional craft business is not fully scalable. Yes, you can make more products as your business gains traction but you would still be limited by the number of products you can physically make.

You could set yourself up with multiple income streams. Learn to build a business selling other peoples products as an affiliate, or even learn to source and sell other people’s physical products and not only will you be creating a passive income for yourself, you’ll be learning valuable marketing skills that you can apply to your own products.

The online educational platform that I found and want to share with you teaches you everything you need to start and run an online business. Learn how to create a professional-looking website and drive customers to your business, no previous experience needed.

On top of that you’ll get access to daily live webinars with the best leaders in the entrepreneur world and a massive private community of like-minded individuals.

We’re not just talking a Facebook group either, but an entire platform which acts as a hub for communicating with fellow entrepreneurs as well as hosting all the training modules and website building tools you’ll need.
